Riko van Hessen was the son of Bernard van Hessen and Frouwke van Dam. He married in Amsterdam on 3 April 1913 to a non-jewish woman, from whom he divorced on 5 May 1927. The couple had two sons, among them Johan Gerard and one daughter, of which one son passed away in Amsterdam on 22 September 1944.
