Joseph Leverpoll got married in 1935 and had two children. His wife and children survived the war. Joseph was deputy director of the Dutch coconut factory in Apeldoorn. After his marriage, Joseph and his family lived in Apeldoorn, at Arnhemscheweg 93 II. During the war he worked for a while as a porter at the Paedagogium Achisomog ward of the Apeldoornse Bos psychiatric institution.
In 1942, Jews were forced to hand in their bicycles. Since Joseph had a new bicycle, he exchanged it with an old one belonging to someone at the coconut factory. Someone in the factory gave him away. As a result, Joseph was taken away in a police car. He ended up first in Camp Amersfoort and subsequently in Westerbork.
