Levi Mendels and Hendrica Mendels were brother and sister. They came from a family with nine siblings. Six of them have died in the Holocaust: Levi self, Pietje, Betje, Emanuel, Hendrica, and Sara. Their parents were Abraham Mendels and Mina Davidson.
Levi and Henrica lived like their married brother Emanuel Mendels in Wolvega. Together they ran a small shop for pots, pans and accessories on the Westeinde. They lived behind their shop. Hendrica managed the shop, and Levie went door to door with his cart piled high with pots, pans and brooms. Levi Mendels was a deaf-mute. He was a well-known sight in Wolvega.
