Leentje (Lea) de Haan had three children from her marriage to Heiman Engelsman. Later she had a fourth child with a man she was engaged to, but who died before they could marry. After her marriage she lived alternately in Amsterdam and Antwerp, where her husband worked in the diamond industry. He died of tuberculosis. When World War I broke out she fled with her four children from Antwerp to the Netherlands, where she settled in The Hague. According to tradition she refused to go into hiding. She said: 'I have lived my life. Young people should not risk their lives for me.'
