Willem Granaat was married. He and his wife had five children. The family lived in Amsterdam. Willem Granaat was a businessman. Because he had not transferred his business 'appropriately' as a Jew, a warrant was issued for his arrest. As a member of the resistance, he arranged about 120 identification cards with data adapted to the needs of the people requiring an identification card. He was caught but managed to escape during a deportation and continued his work with the resistance involving identification cards. On 6 April 1943 he was arrested for the second time in The Hague and deported to Sobibor. Willem Granaat's wife survived the war.
