Samuel van der Hal was a cattle merchant. In 1911 when he was 24, he bought the house at 9 Hoofdstraat in Usquert. In 1914 he got married to Kaatje Cohen. The couple had two children: Grietje and Julius.
On 1 July 1942, Samuel van der Hal was arrested and detained in a cell in the old Winsum town hall. There, he took his own life. He was buried in Warffum.
