Louis Akker was a son of Hartog Levie Akker and Rachel van der Horst. He married Hendrika van der Wijk in 1907 in Weesp. They had four children of whom two survived the war. The other two children were Martha and Lea. He was a broker in Hoogeveen, but not very succesful. In the mid twenties Louis Akker divorced from his wife and went to live in Amsterdam. There he tried to make ends meet by, among other things, selling newspapers at the Central Station.
