Benjamin Emden was a son of Joost Emden and Jansje Canes. This couple had eight children, of which seven die not survive the Holocaust: Fijtje, Hijman, Mietje, Abraham, Clara and Vogeltje. Benjamin married in Amsterdam on 16 December 1903 to Reintje Gerritse. The couple had eight children: Joost, Henriette (who was married to Nathan Schijvenschuurder), Hijman, Flora, Jansje, Hendrica, Abraham and Isaac.
