David Wessel was the secretary of the NIG (Dutch-Jewish community) in Rotterdam from 1907 to 1943. Unlike his predecessors, he was orthodox. He was an excellent stylist, and thanks to his historical survey articles in the Weekblad voor Israëlitische Huisgezinnen (a weekly publication for Jewish families), a good deal of information about the history of Rotterdam’s Jewish community and its institutions has been preserved. In 1937 there was a great celebration of his forty years in office.
