George John Lionel Maduro was unmarried. He studied law in Leiden, where he took his bachelor's degree, and served as an officer during the May invasion of 1940. He was posthumously knighted in the military Order of King Willem.
As a member of the resistance, he stole arms from barracks and performed espionage. On 4 September 1943 he was caught at Charlesville along the Belgian-French border trying to reach England.

After his arrest, George John Lionel Maduro was held in Saarbrücken as a military prisoner. His parents, who were in Curaçao, tried to secure his release in exchange for German soldiers. They were unsuccessful, and in 1944 Maduro was transported to Dachau, where he caught epidemic typhus and died.
After the war, George Maduro’s parents founded Madurodam in memory of their son.
