Julius Gast went into hiding at Ynte Hospes Yntze Hospes and his wife Maria Koornstra in the village of Rottum near Heerenveen. Trough betrayal he was caught and arrested together with Hospes 16 August 1944 and detained in Leeuwarden prison via Heerenveen. On 18 November 1944, Julius Gast was executed near Herbayum at the age of 51, probably because the road from Franeker to Harlingen near that village had been strewn with nails.
