Maurits (or Mauritz) Sternfeld was one of the four children of Izaak and Johanna Sternfeld. The family left Renkum in 1900 and emigrated to Germany, where Izaak Sternfeld established a booming grain business. During the rise of Nazism, both Izaak and Mauritz returned to the Netherlands. Mauritz married in 1935 and started a milk business in Doesburg. His wife and child survived the war. Mauritz was a good friend of Salomon Jacobs, his cousin and brother-in-law.
