Henri Coutinho lived in Poerwadadi (Purwodadi) and Batavia (now Jakarta) with his family. In 1938, the family arrived in the Netherlands for six months’ leave. The two eldest children were to remain in the Netherlands after this period to finish secondary school and begin their post-secondary studies. When the German occupying forces called on all Jews to report to the authorities, he complied, despite numerous warnings. The parents and youngest child returned to the Dutch East Indies in 1939, ending up in a Japanese concentration camp during the war. All three of them survived. The eldest child in the family also survived the war.
