Herbert Wolf was born in 1937 to Alice Wolf, who had fled from Essen (Germany) to the Netherlands earlier that year. In the Netherlands, Herbert lived in Beatrix children’s home in Soestdijk, which was run by his mother. This was a home for children who had come from Germany illegally. Seven other children lived there in addition to Herbert.
