Ernst Baruch Levy was arrested in April 1933 in Hamburg, presumably for his political (communist) activities, and stayed in prison for two months. Afterwards he quit school and went via Sweden and Finland to Amsterdam. He was arrested on 4 August 1942 together with his wife for hiding and otherwise helping illegal German immigrants. He was put into prison in the Oranjehotel in Scheveningen and was later sent to Vught concentration camp. His wife managed to escape from there and survived the war.
