Erna Katzenstein was born in Vöhl, in the home of her parents Samuel Katzenstein and Cäcilie Reichhard. Two more children were born into this family, but both died before the war.
In the years 1895 and 1896, Erna studied at the ‘higher school for girls’ in Mainz. Five years later, on 25 August 1901, she married Albert Baruch (1879-1939).
Two children were born into this marriage: Bernhard and another child of whom it is uncertain whether it survived the war.
