Martinus Eduard Goudsmit studied medicine in Amsterdam, where he sat for his medical finals on 9 March 1911. On 11 December 1913, he obtained his doctoral degree in Amsterdam on the thesis 'The Biological Pregnancy Reaction according to Abderhalden'. Goudsmit specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He first settled in Zaandam and later in Rotterdam at 216 Mathenesserlaan. Martinus Eduard Goudsmit was a governor of the Jewish orphanage in Leiden.

Martinus Eduard Goudsmit was the son of Eduard Mozes Goudsmit and Johanna Jacob Herzberger. He got married in Rotterdam on April 24, 1928.
