Levie van Straten was married in Rotterdam on 19 September 1917. On 30 July 1924 he took a job with the Holland-America Line as a musician. In November 1926 he went to work for the Rotterdamsche Lloyd. He sailed between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies, on the ships Indrapoera, Sibajah, Baloeran, Patia and Slamat. Although his main instrument was the violin, he also played the piano on board. In May 1936, Levie van Straten returned to the Holland-America Line, this time as a bandmaster. On 25 December 1939 he returned from his last voyage.
During the war Levie was unemployed and he joined the resistance. In 1943 Levie van Straten was arrested at his home at Abrikozenstraat 111 in The Hague and taken to Westerbork. On 3 September 1944 he was deported to Auschwitz.

Levie van Straten was deported on 26 October 1944 from Auschwitz to Stutthof and on 17 November 1944 from there to Hailfingen, an auxiliary camp of concentration camp Natzweiler-Struthof.
