Maurits Jacob van Leer worked for the carton factory E. Free & Co. in Oude Pekela as a bookkeeper, from the foundation (1904) until 1942. He made several business trips to foreign countries, mainly to England, to make contracts for the factory. The familie Van Leer lived on the Bosstraat in Winschoten.
