Nathan Levie van Essen was one of the ten children of Levy Nathan van Essen and Betje van Creveld. He got married to Henriëtte van Vriesland. She died on 19 December 1911 in Veenendaal. Nathan Levie van Essen was chairman of the church council in Veenendaal, which also managed the school.
Nathan Levie van Essen was a butcher. His butcher shop was based in the Hoofdstraat in Veenendaal. According to some, he died not in Veenendaal but in Amsterdam. He is buried in the Jewish cemetery at the Parallelweg in Veenendaal, where a tombstone carries his name.
