About Benjamin Jacob Krönstein

Benjamin Jacob Krönstein lived with his mother, Sara, and his grandmother, Judik, under the lighthouse Brandaris on Terschelling. In 1921 his mother had married Abraham Krönstein, a Russian merchant, in London. But before the birth of their son, Benjamin Jacob, she returned to Terschelling. The marriage was dissolved in 1935. So the name Krönstein was unknown on Terschelling; everyone knew Benjamin Jacob as Bennie Pais. After completing primary school in West Terschelling, Bennie went to the MULO (secondary school) in Midsland, also on Terschelling. He and his mother and grandmother were all forced to leave and go to Amsterdam on 25 August 1942 by order of the occupying forces.
