Mozes de Groot was a son of Joseph de Groot and Hester Nieweg. He married in Groningen on 12 May 1895 to Sientje Nieweg. The couple had five children: Estella (unmarried and living with her parents), Louis, Jozef, Marcus and Samuel, who survived the Holocaust.
