Jacob Winkel briefly worked as a sales representative for the cigar factory ‘Gulden Vlies’. Before the war Jacob ran a successful retail trade in textiles and fashion in Haarlem and Apeldoorn. The Winkel family lived in Haarlem, first on Raamsingel and then on Kleine Houtstraat. After Jacob’s bankruptcy, his brother-in-law had helped him set up business in the cigar trade.
