Carolina Goldsteen-Mendel was the widow of George Goldsteen, who died in 1934. The two of them had a hat shop in Kohlscheid, which included a workshop employing about thirty people. The business later moved to Rheydt. Carolina and George and their three children came to the Netherlands in the mid-1920s. George Goldsteen opened a foreign exchange office in Vaals. During the war, Carolina went into hiding with her son Alfred Goldsteen. Another son of hers, Frederik, had already been arrested by then. The third child survived the war, but his wife, Elfriede Goldsteen-Lebenstein, was arrested with Carolina.
