On 1 January 1895 Nathan Koppen was appointed headmaster at the Jewish religious school in Winschoten. He was later appointed cantor there as well. He and his family lived on the Bosstraat near the synagogue.
At the celebration of his 30th jubilee on 1 January 1925 the gifts he received included a coat rack with a mirror. At the celebration of his 40th jubilee his students serenaded him, and he received an envelope with money from the Jewish community.

Nathan Koppens was brought to camp Westerbork on 1 December 1942. On 8 December 1942 he was put on a transport to Auschwitz.
