Elsje van Dam was the daughter of Maurits van Dam and Saartje Rozenvelt. There were nine children in this family: Israel (1866), Racheltje (1867), Hartog (1870-1942), Levie (1873), Phillipus (1875-1942), Elsje, Hendrina (1881-1942), Aron (1884-1942), and one child that survived the war.
Elsje van Dam was first married to Hermannus Wilhelm Spier, who died in 1929. Five years later she married Gerrit van Kommer. He died in Groningen in 1938.
After the war she was buried at the Jewisch cemetery at Groningen, where she got a national war victim's grave.
Elsje had two children whose father was unknown: her son Maurits was born in 1901 and died in 1912 and her daughter Mina was born in 1908 and died in 1909.
