Hijman Swaluw was a son of Isaac Swaluw and Maria Melkman. He married Susanna de Jong in Rotterdam 15 June 1938, a daughter of Jacob de Jong and Roosje Rodenburg. As far as known, this couple had no offspring. After their marriage they started at the address Crispijnseweg 5 b in Rotterdam, where they lived in. After having lived in at two other addresses in Rotterdam, their last address was Aleidisstraat 54a In Rotterdam, also as lodgers.
Hijman was born into a family with six children. Only his sister Bloeme might have survived the Shoah. The other siblings, namely Judith, Esther, Hartog and Sara were killed in the Shoah, whether or not with their families.
10 April 1943, Hijman and Susanna were deported from their last known address Aleidisstraat 54 a in Rotterdam to Camp Westerbork, where they stayed in barack 57 after being registered there. 20 April they were put on transport to Sobibor where they were killed immediately 23 April 1943 upon arrival there.
