Biography

About Frederika Con.

Frederika Con was a daughter of Jacob Con and Esther van Gelder and was one of the four daughters of Jacob and Esther. Her sisters were Henrietta, Eva and Flora. Only her sister Henrietta survived the Holocaust; she self and both her other sisters were killed in the Shoah.

Frederika’s parents moved frequently from Amsterdam to Antwerp and back. Due to that her sisters were born at different places: she was born in Amsterdam, Eva and Flora in Borgerhout and Henrietta in Antwerp.

Just as her sisters Eva and Flora, as also her mother, Frederika has been deported 27 August 1942 with Convoy 6 from Mechelen to Auschwitz. Presumably Frederika and both her sisters lived with their parents at home in Antwerp, at Lange Nieuwstraat 16, and were they, and their father, have been arrested in the night of 16 August 1942 in Antwerp and sent to the transfer camp at Mechelen. Frederika’s father has been deported already 25 August 1942 with Convoy 5 to Auschwitz and killed there 31 August 1942.

Convoy 6 was put together with people who were already fetched and waited in the transfer camp what would happen. A further specification of this transport made it clear that this was the first convoy from Belgium, where men between 15 and 50 years old had to step out the train at Kozel, and where they were forcedly put to work in the surrounding satellite camps of Auschwitz. It were 280 persons of the 1000 who were put on this transport to the utmost. After the selection at Kozel, no other deportee from this convoy should enter the camp of Auschwitz – no one has been registered in the camp. 720 deportees – all women – were killed upon arrival there immediately, among them Frederika Con, her sisters Eva and Flora and her mother Esther Con-van Gelder.
