Biography

About Rebecca Zippora de Lange and her husband Harry de Groot.

Rebecca Zippora de Lange, 22 years old, daughter of Hartog Jozef de Lange and Martha Muller, married 25 June 1942 in Amsterdam the 23-year old Harry de Groot, a son of Asser de Groot and Dina Muller. Since 1934, Rebecca Zippora lived with her parents at Plantage Kerklaan 11 upperhouse and Harry de Groot lived with his parents since 1936 at 2e Jan van der Heijdenstraat 96 3rd stock. However, up from 13 July 1942 their address became both Plantage Kerklaan 15 downfloor and 1st stock.

Both were socially very involved in their Jewish Community. Rebecca Zippora had a good education: she graduated the 5-year H.B.S. (Hogere Burger School) and was employed as teacher at school 3 at Plantage Muidergracht in Amsterdam, she was a religious teacher in the lowest degree and course leader at the youth synagogue Beis Jisroeil in Amsterdam.

Harry de Groot became an assistant accountant at the JVvVV (Joodsche Vereniging voor Verpleging en Verzorging – Jewish Society for Nursing and Caring, who had also the management of all Jewish institutions for nursing and caring. Orphanages and children’s homes were the responsibility of Dr. L. Leydesdorff, hospitals by dr. S. Spijer and old people’s homes by A. van den Bergh. The works ceased in October 1943). After Harry was registered by the Jewish Council, he had a job since 7 August 1942 as an attendant and carer for poor people at the Social Affairs Bureau at Houtmarkt 10 (nowadays Jonas Daniël Meijerplein) in Amsterdam. it was therefore that Harry and Rebecca Zippora were exempted from deportation untill furhter notice.

26 May 1943 Rebecca Zippora and her husband Harry, togehter with her parents were deported to Westerbork and locked in at barack 57. 1 June, all were put on transport to Sobibor, where on arrival there 4 June 1943, all were immediately killed.
