Biography

About Joseph Lievendag and his wife Rachel Dikker.

Joseph Lievendag, born 17 July 1869 in Borne, was a son of Salomon Lievendag and Rozetta Sleisner. 21 October 1903, he married Rachel Dikker in Amsterdam, a daughter of Mozes Jacob Dikker and Sophia Zadoks. The couple had four children; Rozet and Salomon have died as babies; Sophie (1905) and Salomon Mozes (1909) were killed in the Shoah.

After the wedding, the Lievendag family lived in Enschede at various addresses. There their children were born. However, 11 January 1937 Joseph and Rachel left Enschede for Amsterdam were they arrived at Nieuwe Heerengracht 121 1st floor. In 1939 the left for Bossenburgerplein 10 and in 1940 a few removals followed: first to Tweede Jan van der Heijdenstraat 38 ground- and 1st floor and some four weeks later to Hoogeweg 15 ground floor. Their last removal was 4 September 1941 to Ruyschstraat 7, also in Amsterdam.

Joseph’s wife Rachel Dikker passed away 29 July 1942 in Amsterdam and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery in Diemen. Joseph Lievendag however was deported in the night of 27-28 January 1943 to Westerbork and locked in at barack 65. 9 February  he was put on transport to Auschwitz and on arrival there 12 February 1943, Joseph Lievendag has been immediately killed.
