Biography

About Salomon Mozes Mooij, his wife Sophia Meijer and their son Henry.

Salomon Mozes Mooij was a son of Hartog Mooij and Leentje van Spier. He married in Oirschot Sophia Meijer on 16 November 1926. She was born there as daughter of Barend Abraham Meijer and Rosa de Groot. The couple had a son Henry on 17 October 1929, but he was known as Hansje.

Sophia Meiejr had another sister Babeth, who was born in Oirschot on 18 May 1907. Sophia and Babeth were the only two children of Barend Abraham Meijer and Rosa de Groot. Babeth married 5 March 1929 Mozes Maurits Andriesse, a son of Hertog Napoleon Andriesse and Elisabeth Levison. They had two children, namely Rosa Sientje in 1932 and Barend Joseph in 1938. The couple lived in Veghel and by going into hiding, the family managed to survive the Holocaust.

Salomon Mozes was born into a large family. His parents, Hartog Mooij and Leentje van Spier had ten children. Three of them died already at a young age, one daughter passed away at the age of 29 years and the other children, namely Salomon Mozes himself, and five sisters were killed during the Holocaust. Also Hartog Mooij, father of Salomon Mozes, was killed in the Shoah. Leentje van Spier however passed away already in 1937.

Salomon Mozes Mooij left Hengelo for Amsterdam and was registered in the Peoples Registry of Amsterdam on 16 May 1924. Sophia Meijer arrived two years later and one month afther her marriage on 15 December 1926 she and her husband moved in a house at Borssenbrugstraat 35 in Amsterdam. In 1934 they moved to Stadhouderskade 30 ground floor and on 13 March 1941 the family moved to NBClaan 6 in Veghel. 12 September 1941 they returned to Stadhouderskade 3rd floor in Amsterdam an in November again to nr. 30 ground floor.

On 23 May 1942 they left to Amstellaan 53 1st floor, from where the family was taken and carried off 23 August 1942 to Westerbork. Just after one day, on 24 August, the were all deported to Auschwitz.

The transport of 24 August 1942 with 519 deportees, arrived in Auschwitz on 26 August 1942. On arrival there, Sophia and her son Henry (Hansje) were immediately killed. Salomon Mozes however had been selected for “work” in the camp or in some other “command” (kommando). It is not known on which date exactly he has lost his life but his official date of death has been established as on 30 September 1942 in Auschwitz.
