Biography

About Simon Lazarus Simons, his wife Rachel Harmanna de Jong and her baby son Abraham Simons.

Simon Lazarus Simons, born in Winschoten on 10 March 1908 as son of Abraham Simons and Jeannette Salomon, married 31 October 1940 in Winschoten Rachel Harmanna de Jong, born in Norg (Drenthe) on 22 August 1910, daughter of Bernard de Jong and Rachel de Levie. The couple had one son, Abraham, who was born 25 December 1942 in Westerbork.

After their wedding, Simon and Rachel lived at Engelstilstraat 27 in Winschoten. At some point, Simon Lazarus Simons was carried off to Camp Amersfoort, from where he on 16 July 1942 has been deported via Westerbork to Auschwitz. On his registration card from the file cabinet of the Jewish Council was annotated that he “in accordance with “Starklist” bl.10 was arrived in Auschwitz”. No doubt that on arrival there he was selected for “work”.

It is not known when and where exactly Simon Lazarus Simons has lost his life or has been killed; After the war, Dutch authorities have established his date and place of death as on 30 September 1942 in Auschwitz.

When Rachel Harmanna Simons-de Jong was carried off to Westerbork on 12 November 1942, she was far pregnant. She was accommodated in the “Krankenhaus” (hospital) in barrack 5 and on 25 December 1942 her son Abraham was born there. In January 1943 they were transferred to barrack 41 where they stayed till Rachel and her little son Abraham were put on transport on 18 May to Sobibor. There, on arrival on 21 May, they were both immediately killed.
