Bettus van Gelder, also called Ben, was the youngest son of Benjamin van Gelder and Johanna Mogendorff. He was born in Dedemsvaart, municipality of Avereest on 20 June 1915. He was unmarried, however in the Joodsche Weekblad (Jewish Weekly) nr. 18 of 8 August 1941 an announcent had been placed about the engagement of “Liny van Straten from Rumpt and Ben van Gelder from Eibergen”. Lina van Straten, born in 1916 and usually called Liny, was a daughter of Louis van Straten ane Minna Hes. However, as far as known it never has come to a marriage.
In 1921 the Benjamin van Gelder family left voor Zwolle and Bettus went from there to Eibergen, where he lived at Groenlosestraat A286. According his registration card from the file cabinet of the Jewish Council, he was employed there since 11 August 1938 as religious teacher and conductor of service and in Borculo since 1 November 1941. Because of function, Bettus was exempted from deportation by the Jewish Council until further notice .
On the registration card from the Jewish Council is also listed that Bettus van Gelder had to move from Eibergen to Amsterdam, to the Schalk Burgerstraat 13 and afterwards to Transvaalstraat 117. On 11 June 1943 he was taken to Westerbork and from there on 6 July 1943 deported to Sobibor, where he on arrival there on 9 July 1943 immediately was killed.
