Biography

About Jacob van Embden, his wife Esther Hamerslag and their daughter Sara.

Jacob van Embden, born 22 January 1921 in Amsterdam as son of Andries van Embden and Sara Mok, married 25 September 1940 in Amsterdam Esther Hamerslag, who was born 19 September 1922 in Amsterdam as daughter of Levie Hamerslag and Aaltje Wegloop. Jacob was a tailor by profession and Esther was a dressmaker. On 3 March 1941 their daughter Sara was born.

After they were wed, they went living in Joden Houttuinen 8 1st floor in Amsterdam. However, they frequently relocated to another addresses, as in December 1940  to Zanddwarsstraat 26 3rd floor, in May 1941 to 2e Rozendwarsstraat 12 ground floor, in February 1942 to Rapenburgerstraat 70/72 and the last removal before the family was deported, was to Lange Houtstraat 37 2nd floor-rightside.

Jacob van Embden was carried off to concentration camp Vught on 31 March 1943 and from there on 6 April with a so-called “penal transport” sent to Westerbork. There he ended up in barrack 57 and 83a.  It is unclear whether his wife Esther with her little daughter Sara has been sent to Vught too. It is certain however that the whole family was put on transport on 27 April 1943 from Westerbork to Sobibor and on arrival there on 30 April, they were all immediately killed.
