Samuël Barend, bread deliverer by profession, was a son of Salomon Barend and Lena IJzerkoper. He was born 27 August 1889 in Amsterdam, where he married Esther van Ploeg from Bolsward on 11 August 1909. She was born 3 October 1889 to Aron van Ploeg and Hendrina de Jong. The couple had two children, namely Lena in 1909 and Aron in 1910. All were killed during the Shoah.
After their marriage in 1909, Samuël and Esther moved into a house at Uilenburgerstraat 88 in the old Jewish quarter of Amsterdam, moved to Korte Houtstraat 6 and to Valkenburgerstraat 147 in 1910, to Weesperstraat 107 in 1925 and on 13 November 1936 the family moved to Lekstraat 10 2nd floor in Amsterdam-South. The last removal was on 18 December 1940 to Vechtstraat 166 2nd floor, where their daughter Lena, her husband Hijman Kool and son Max lived already on the 1st floor.
Early September 1942, Samuël and Esther were taken to Westerbork. Certain is that the name of Esther Barend-van Ploeg occurred on the transport list of 4-5 September 1942 but for unknown reasons her deportation was postponed. One week later, she was still deported to Auschwitz, now together with her husband Samuël Barend where both were immediately killed on arrival there on 14 September 1942.
