Biography

About Meijer Salomon Kannewasser and his spouse Rachel Ziekenoppasser.

Meijer Salomon Kannewasser was a son of Salomon Aron Kannewasser and Jansje Leon Beek. He was born in Den Helder on 8 April 1885 and provided in his livelihood as commercial traveller and haberdasher. On 23 June 1915 he married in Zaandam the in 1889 in Amsterdam born Rachel Ziekenoppasser, a daughter of Saul Ziekenoppasser and Henriette van Gelder. The couple had one son: Salomon Meijer Kannewasser who was born 24 September 1916 in Amsterdam and who became widely known as "Jones" in the famous artist duo "Johnny and Jones" in the 1930's.

Meijer Kannewasser however has moved already before his marriage from Den Helder to Amsterdam. On 13 August 1906 he was registered at the address Westerstraat 86, where he lived in with Salomon Heijlbron. After four years, he moved on 16 December 1910 to Nieuwee Kerkstraat 125 and in 1913 to Galerij 21. In 1914 Meijer lived still at Tweede Boerhaavestraat 57 and per 26 June 1915 at Tolstraat 102. After his wedding, Rachel Ziekenoppasser came living in at this last address too and there also their son Salomon Meijer was born. In 1919 followed again a removal to Pieter Aertsstraat 102 2nd floor and per 9 October 1937, their last address in Amsterdam became Lekstraat 130 2nd stock in Amsterdam South.

Their son Salomon Meijer lived still at home with his parents but on 26 August 1942 he married in Amsterdam Suzanne Hermine Koster, who was born in 1922 in Surabaya (Dutch East Indies). Salomon Meijer eventually lost his life in Bergen Belsen but his wife Suzanne surivived the Shoah.

Meijer’s spouse Rachel Ziekenoppasser was taken 17 April 1943 from her home address Lekstraat 130 to Westerbork where she had to stay in barrack 57. She was registered as “nurse aid” and she would be employed at Resthome Van Leeuwen-Braaf in the Johannes Verhulststraat 166 in Amsterdam. However, upon inquiry on 24 December 1942, she would not be working there......

Ten days after arrival in Westerbork, on 27 April 1943 Rachel Kannewasser-Ziekenoppasser was put on transport to Sobibor. This transport contained in total 1204 deportees who were all upon arrival there on 30 April 1943, immediately killed in the gaschambers, among them Rachel Ziekenoppasser too.

Most likely, Meijer Salomon Kannewasser has responded to the call for provision of additional work in Germany already in July 1942. On 7 August 1942 he was deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz where he was deployed as forced labourer. It is not known on which date exactly Meijer Salomon lost his life there but after the war, the Dutch Ministry of Justice ordered the City of Amsterdam to draw up a certificate of death for Meijer Salomon Kannewasser, in which has been established that he lost his life on 30 September 1942 in Auschwitz.
