Biography

About Salomon Knoop and his family.

Salomon Knoop, born 21 May 1860 in Amsterdam, was a son of Hartog Barend Knoop and Benvenida Cohen de Solla. On 1 December 1880 he married in Amsterdam Ribca Lopes Cardozo, born 14 June 1859 in Amsterdam as daughter of Abraham Lopes Cardozo and Ester Cohen de Solla.

The Knoop couple had eight chidren, namely Marie in 1881, Esther in 1882, Hartog in 1884, Rachel in 1885, Sophia in 1887, Abraham in 1888, Clara in 1890 and Elisabeth in 1894. Hartog died already in November 1884, 8 months old and Sophia died only 10 weeks old in 1887 . Clara left Amsterdam for Los Angeles on 11 November 1926 but further nothing is known of her. Abraham and Elisabeth have survived the Holocaust: Abraham passed away in 1950 and Elisabeth after 1959. Marie, Esther and Rachel however were killed during the Shoah.

Also Salomon’s spouse, Ribca Lopes Cardoz passed away at a rathet young age: on 15 May 1912 she died at the age of 53 and was interred 17 May in the Jewish Cemetery of Muiderberg. Widower Salomon Knoop remarried on 4 February 1914 in Weesp to Saartje Polak, born 30 July 1861 as daughter of Izaak Meijer Polak and Roosje Benjamin Voorzanger. However, she died during the war in Amsterdam on 29 January 1943.

Salomon Knoop, who was a brilliant polisher by trade, lived with his family at many addresses in town. His last known address, where he lived with his second wife was Plantage Franschelaan 11 parterre. From there, Salomon was taken on 3 February 1943 to the Hollandsche Schouwburg and from there to Westerbork, where he was locked in barrack 83. On 9 Febuary he was put on transport to Auschwitz, and on arrival there on 12 February 1943 he was immediately killed.
