Biography

The fate of Esther Knoop

Esther Knoop, born 18 November 1882 in Amsterdam, was the 2nd of the eight children of Salomon Knoop and Ribca Lopes Cardozo. She lived with her parents in Amsterdam till 29 March 1917 when she left Amsterdam voor Hengelo in the province of Overijssel. She lived there at the address Vondelstraat 3 and she was a ladies fashion hat maker by trade. She was unmarried.

When the German occupiers in 1942 ordered all Jews living in the province to move to Amsterdam, Esther had to move too, but she didn't. Instead she tried to find hiding to escape deportation. She contacted her sister Rachel Vles-Knoop in Amsterdam, came living with her at Ringdijk 81 in Amsterdam-East in December 1942 and they went into hiding. However they were betrayed, arrested in Laren, brought to de Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam and ended up 9 October 1943 in Westerbork in the penal barrack 67.

On 19 October 1943 Esther was put on transport to Auschwitz, together with her sister Rachel and on arrival there on 22 October 1943, they were immediately killed.
