The fate of Abraham Hartog Root and his wife Leentje de Leeuw.

Abraham Hartog Root, the 3rd child of Mozes Root and Leentje Frank, was born 23 July 1881 in Post Nassau in the district of Beneden Saramacca in Suriname. His parents were married in Paramaribo in 1875 but with their then four children returned to the Netherlands in 1891, where three more children were born in Amsterdam in the following years.

Abraham Hartog Root was a dealer in flowers and he was married to Leentje de Leeuw in Amsterdam on 31 May 1911. She was a daughter of Abraham de Leeuw and Sara Goudsmit and was born 21 December 1883 in Haarlem. The couple Root-de Leeuw had no children.

After they were wed, the couple lived at Raamgracht 9 in Amsterdam, moved 4 January 1912 to Oude Zijds Achterburgwal 49 and eight months later to Groenburgwal 38. In August 1930 the moved to Kerkstraat 39 and on 6 August 1938 their address became Thorbeckeplein 18 III in the city centre of Amsterdam, which became also their last known address.

On 12 November 1942 they were both carried off to Westerbork. On both their registration card of the Jewish Council was taken down that they had “no faith”. Still they were put on transport to Auschwitz four days later – 16 November 1942 – and on arrival there on 19 November 1942 Abraham Hartog Root and Leentje Root-de Leeuw were immediately murdered.
