David Mozes de Jong, born 9 September 1890 in Rotterdam, was a son of Abraham de Jong and Esther de Koning. He married in Rotterdam on 29 November 1922 the non-Jewish 24-year old Johanna Wilhelmina Coomans from Gouda, a daughter of Arnoldus Coomans and Aartje Verweij. Already on 15 March 1922 their first child was born, a son named Abraham, who was legalized during the wedding ceremony of his parents in November 1922. Their daughter Hester was born 29 July 1923. In July 1932 the family lived at Nieuwe Binnenweg 79b in Rotterdam but they moved 1 May 1937 to Gordelweg 171b in Hillegersberg.
Early July 1942 David Mozes de Jong was arrested for unknown reasons and carried off to Camp Amersfoort. On 16 July he was transferred from there to Westerbork and the same day deported to Auschwitz. This transport consisted of 895 deportees, including also 309 persons who arrived that same day from Camp Amersfoort.
The exact date of death of David Mozes de Jong is officially not known. But it is certain that on arrival in Auschwitz on 17 August 1942, when he was 52 years of age, he has entered the camp, where he received the prison number 48178. No doubt he might have been deployed as forced labourer in one way or another, however, the “Sterbebücher” from Auschwitz already one week later revealed, that David Mozes de Jong was killed there on 25 August 1942.
This date differs from the official date of death of 30 Septembe 1942, as officially has been established by the Ministry of Justice and was recorded in his certificate of death, drawn up by the Municipality of Rotterdam, folio v3-103, no. 1950-2950 of 22 September 1950 and as shown on the Joods Monument.
