Biography

About Levie Mesritz and his wife Vrouwtje Swart.

Levie Mesritz, born 21 May 1896 in Amsterdam, was a son of Elias Mesritz and Sara Gompers. His father passed away on 6 June 1932 and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery at Muiderberg. His mother lived already at Weesperstraat 37 since 1896 and stayed there, till she was arrested on 20 May 1943 and deported to Sobibor. Also Levie has always lived in his parental home.

Levie Mesritz was a butcher by profession, just as his father. He married 12 August 1942 Vrouwtje Swart in Amsterdam, a daughter of Simon Swart and Sara Dagloonder. His bride still lived with her parents at Rapenburgerstraat 102 1st floor, but after she was married in 1942, she moved in with Levie and his mother, the widow Sara Mesritz-Gompers at Weesperstraat 37.

Levie was “gesperrt” by the Jewish Council – exempted from deportation until further notice. As a butcher he was employed by the "meat supply" with Messrs. M.B. Menko in the Rapenburgerstraat 103. Because of his “Sperre” also his wife Vrouwtje was exempted from deportation. Both had a sperre number: Elias 3/82023 and Vrouwtje 3/82024.

However, the end of May 1943, all stamps were cancelled by the Germans and both were arrested and carried off to Westerbork, where they were registered on 25 May 1943 and accommodated in barrack 63. On 1 June they were both put on transport to Sobibor where they were immediately killed in the gas chambers on arrival there on 4 June 1943.
