Biography

About the sisters Elizabeth and Grietje Slagter and their stepmother Aaltje Plukker.

Two of the five children of Mozes Barend Slagter and Rosetta Zoest remained unmarried. It were Elizabeth, born 17 october 1886 in Rotterdam and her sister Grietje, who was born there on 26 August 1889. Elizabeth was a seamstress but Grietje was registered in the Peoples Registry without profession. They lived at home with their parents but on 28 January 1907 Elizabeth left her parental home in the Van Alkemadestraat 13, but returned home in 1908, whilst in the meantime her parents have moved to house nr. 21b, and were the family in 1918 again has moved to house nr. 17a.

Mozes Barend Slagter, dealer in wallpaper, was taken ill in the psychiatric hosptial Maasoord in Poortugaal on 30 December 1920, where he passed away on 8 August 1924. His first wife Rosetta Zoest passed already on 3 August 1899 in Rotterdam, and Mozes Barend remarried then that same year on 20 December Aaltje Plukker from Amsterdam, born 3 October 1857 as a daughter of Simon Hartog Plukker and Matje Levison. After the passing of Mozes Barend Slagter, Aaltje Plukker moved in 1933 to the Hugo de Grootstraat 10b in Rotterdam and on 22 September 1936 to the Adrien Mildersstraat 29a, and the sisters Elizabeth and Grietje moved along.

It is not impossible that Elizabeth might have responded to the call for the so-called “provision of additional work in Germany”- the Arbeitseinsatz. On 12 August 1942 she was already in Westerbork and has been deported to Auschwitz on 14 August. On arrival there on 16 August 1942 she wasn’t selected to perform “labor” but was immediately killed in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Grietje Slagter on the other hand, was carried off to Westerbork on 14 October 1942, together with her stepmother Aaltje Plukker. She stayed over eight weeks in the camp in barrack 70 and in the hospital barrack 81, till she was “completely healed” put on transport to Auschwitz on 12 December 1942 where she has been killed immediately in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau on 15 December 1942. Aaltje Plukker died in Camp Westerbork on 19 December 1942 and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery in Assen on 22 December 1942.
