The Nazis selected these people from lists compiled by K.J. Frederiks, the secretary general of the Interior, and Professor C. van Dam, the secretary general of Education. They were sent to live in the castle 'De Schaffelaar' and the mansion 'De Biezen' in Barneveld. In August 1943 this group comprised 640 people. In September the Nazis fetched the Barneveld Jews and took them to Westerbork. Several escaped. At Westerbork the Barneveld Jews retained their special status. Most were deported to Theresienstadt but survived the war.
