Biography

About Abraham Klatser, his wife Rachel Presser & their sons David Arnold and Arnold Jacques.

Abraham Klatser, who was born on 16 June 1908 in the Municpality of Watergraafsmeer, (later included in the City of Amsterdam), was a son of Arnold Klatser and Truitje Stodel. He worked as a shop assistant in a fashion store but later he became active as photographer. On 4 September 1934 he married Rachel Presser in Amsterdam, who was born on 21 May 1905 there as daughter of David Presser and Sara Milhado. The couple had two children, namely David Arnold in 1936 and Arnold Jacques in 1938.

After his birth in 1908, Abraham lived with his parents at Watergraafsmeer but moved in 1912 to Kromme Mijdrechtstraat 34 ground floor in Amsterdam. After being married to Rachel Presser in September 1934, they moved to Meppel and lived there in the 2nd Hoofdstraat 7. However they returned in 1935 to Amsterdam and lived then at Hoofdweg 328 in Amsterdam-West. They then moved to Jan Evertsenstraat 118 2nd floor, till they could move into a house at Lekstraat 64 1st floor on 16 April 1938, where they have lived till they were deported in July 1942.

On 19 July 1942, the entire Klatser family was registered in Westerbork and deported to Auschwitz on 27 July. On arrival there on 29 July 1942, Rachel Klatser-Presser and both her sons David Arnold and Arnold Jacques were immediately murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Meantime, upon arrival, Abraham Klatser was selected as “suitable to work” and has been put to work as a forced labourer in the camp. He received the prisoners number 53412. But the “Sterbebücher” from Auschwitz (the death registers), show that Abraham afte 2 ½ week , on 16 Augustus 1942 has lost his lifte there, most likely murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. After the war, the Dutch Ministry of Justice commissioned the Municipality of Amsterdam to draw up a death certificate , nr. 221 dated 8 Septembe 1950, in which officially has been established that Abraham Klatser has died in Auschwitz on 17 Augustus 1942.
