Biography

About Meijer Swaap and his wife Branca Jacobs and their three children.

Meijer Swaap, a son of Abraham Swaap and Rebecca Arbeid. He was born on 9 July 1891 in Amsterdam and he was working as a typesetter (later as a casual worker), when he married on 8 November 1916 to Branca Jacobs, who was born on 27 November 1895 as a daughter of Samuel Jacobs and Betje Dingsdag. The couple had three children, viz. Rebecca on 10 March 1917, Betje on 8 February 1921 and Abraham on 10 March 1923.

Daughter Rebecca Swaap survived the Holocaust. She married Gerrit Wijnschenk in December 1937 with whom she had a daughter Yvonne, but she divorced us on 1 May 1946, after which she remarried Gerrit Jan Assink on 25 June 1946 and had a son Gerrit Hendrik with Gerrit Jan.

Son Abraham Swaap also survived the Holocaust. He married Celina Delden in August 1942, who, together with her sister Lena, became victims of the raid on 11 November 1942 at the Hollandia Kattenburg clothing factory and were murdered in Auschwitz on 3 December 1942, together with their parents. Abraham reported himself on 9 January 1946 to the authorities, who he informed about his whereabouts Kromme Waal 12 II in Amsterdam. He passed away in 1991 in Queens, New York.

Their daughter Betje Swaap lived at home at Waterlooplein 79 3rd floor in the center of Amsterdam. She was murdered in Auschwitz and her date of death has been established as on 30 September 1942. (see her story on Betje Swaap). 

Meijer Swaap and his wife Branca Jacobs were deported to Westerbork at the beginning of October 1942, from where they were deported to Auschwitz on 2 October. On 5 October 1942, both were immediately murdered in the gas chamber upon arrival.
