Biography

About Barend Delden and his wife Rachel Santen.

Barend Delden was a son of Jacob Delden and Leentje Ossedrijver. He was born on 31 December 1902 in Amsterdam and worked as a warehouse clerk. On 22 August 1923 he married Rachel Santen, who was born on 7 August 1903 in Amsterdam as a daughter of David Danten en Mietje Sarlui. The couple had no children.

After being married, the couple moved in with Barend’s father Jacob Delden, who lived at Korte Houtstraat nr.3 but on 5 February 1923, the moved into an own house in the same street at nr. 41. One year later, they moved to house nr. 31 and at the end of December 1928 they left for Vrolikstraat 30 1st floor in Amsterdam-East and in May 1937 to Dani Theronstraat 12, which would become also their last known address in the Netherlands.

In the night of 9 to 10 March 1943, Barend Delden and his wife Rachel Santen were carried off from Amsterdam to concentration camp Vught. Barend has been put to work there as an “unpicker” and Rachel as furrier. But on 21 May 1943 Barend was sent from Vught to the sub camp Moerdijk, where bunkers had to be built and tank traps had to be dug as a defence for the Moerdijk bridges.Barend stayed there in barrack 2b.

After Barend was back in Vught, he and his wife Rachel were transferred to Westerbork on 2 July 1942 where they had to wait for their deportation in barrack 68.

Deportation followed on 6 July 1943 to Sobibor in a transport of 2417 victims, who were all murdered in the gas chambers there upon arrival on 9 July 192, including Barend Delden and Rachel Delden-Santen. Of this transport, there were no survivors.
