Born in Meppel, Netherlands to Meijer and Marie van Esso, Ada was the only member of her family to survive Auschwitz and the death march to Ravensbrueck. She married Hans J. van Dam in 1947. They immigrated to the US after six years in the Dutch-speaking island of Curaçao with their three children: Ine-Marie, Carla and Norbert. Ada raised her family in the Bryant and Magnolia neighborhoods of Seattle, learning American English along the way and receiving a bachelor's degree at the UW in 1969. Hans, meanwhile, served as the Dutch Honorary Consulate for the Pacific Northwest for 12 years. Ada was widowed in 1981; she retired at age 70 from Swedish Tumor Institute. She is survived by her three children, four grandchildren, one grandson A Ada was resilient and positive in spite of the trauma she faced in her teen years. Her story of survival can be viewed at https://www.holocaustcenterseattle.org/ada-van-esso No service is planned but we hope you will partake in one Ada's favorite activities, bike riding, hiking, reading, folk dancing or plant a tulip in her honor.
