Independent Documentary, “Light in Silent Sorrow: The Story of My Oma” 1999-2000

2001 Gracie Allen Award, American Women in Radio and Television for an hour-long documentary about Margot Woudstra, and her experiences going into hiding in the Netherlands during World War II. Gunter Woudstra, Johanna Annelise Simons-Woudstra and Margot were siblings.

Shot in 2000 on location in Holland, this first-person narrative documentary traces Margot Woudstra's journey through in-depth interviews with her, her daughter and granddaughter, archival photos, and personal family letters exchanged secretly during the war. This is a story of survival, loss and hope as told through the eyes of the woman who lived it and the granddaughter struggling to confront a chilling history. Margot's legacy of seeking the light in the darkest of hours reverberated through generations of her family and lives on today.
