Biography

The fate of Henriette Salomons.

Henriette Salomons was born on 17 January  1906 in Hilversum as the daughter of Meijer Salomons and Bloeme de Paauw. She was the 12th of a total of 13 children in that family. She was born in Hilversum and came to Amsterdam with her family on 7  March 1906,  just 2 months old.

The Salomons family lived then at Swammerdamstraat 34 in Amsterdam-East until October 1909, from where they then moved to Hoogeweg 70 in Watergraafsmeer - then still a separate municipality. On 7 October 1910 they moved back to Hilversum where they moved into a house at Langestraat 35.

Henriette remained unmarried. She became a domestic helper/maid and lived again in Amsterdam since 3 March 1916, at various addresses. She was compulsorily registered with the Jewish Council at the beginning of 1941 at Hunzestraat 11 in the River District of Amsterdam-South. On 20 November 1942, Henriette moved to Afrikanerplein 27, 1st floor, in the Transvaal District of Amsterdam-East.

After her registration with the Jewish Council, she was given a “Sperre” due to her position. (exempted from deportation because of function until further notice). However, the very brief information and notes on her registration card from the Jewish Council do not indicate why she was exempted from deportation, nor what position she held and where.

But on 20 June 1943, Henriette Salomons was also arrested during the raids secretly prepared by the Germans at several locations in Amsterdam, during which more than 5500 Jews were arrested and deported to Westerbork. On 6 July 1943, Henriette was deported to Sobibor, where she was murdered immediately in the gas chambers there on 9 July 1943.
