Nathan Melkman and Rachel Groen had two children. During the war the children were no longer allowed to attend the public elementary school. They had to go to a seperate Jewish school. Shortly afterwards all Jewish families had to leave Zantvoort. They were no longer allowed to live on the coast.
The Melkman family had tried to escape to England by ship, together with another Jewish family. The attempt failed. Their children and the other family survived the war.
